The SM-liiga season 1976/77 was the second season of the Finnish SM-liiga . Finnish champions were for the fifth time overall and for the first time since the introduction of the SM-liiga Tappara Tampere , while FoPS was relegated to the second division.

Regular season

mode

The ten teams of the SM-liiga initially played against each other in 36 seasonal games. While the first four teams qualified for the play-offs, the last two had to play against the two best second division teams to stay in the league. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

The last two placed in the SM-liiga main round and the two best second division teams played for promotion and relegation in return legs. Since Kärpät and FoPS each scored six points, they played against each other in a decision game, which Kärpät won 9: 3.
