Markus Rainer Mattsson (born July 30, 1957 in Suoniemi ) is a former Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Winnipeg Jets , Minnesota North Stars and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League from 1974 to 1987 .

Career

Markus Mattsson began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of Ilves Tampere , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM sarja in the 1974/75 season . In his first season the goalkeeper was able to convince with a catch rate of 90.5 percent in 15 games and received the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy as the best rookie in the league. In the following two years he was able to assert himself as a regular goalkeeper at Ilves in the SM-liiga , the new highest Finnish league, and was in the fifth round of the NHL Amateur Draft in 1977 as the 87th player from the New York Islanders , as well as in the WHA Amateur Draft selected in the sixth round in 1977 as the 57th overall player by the Houston Eros .

The transfer judge to Mattsson finally secured the Houston Eros, which, however, handed him over to their league rivals Winnipeg Jets before the start of the 1977/78 season . From February to March 1978, the Finn was in the meantime with the Nordiques de Québec between the posts, but then returned to Winnipeg. With the Jets he won the Avco World Trophy in the 1977/78 season . After Winnipeg was accepted into the National Hockey League , the Finnish national goalkeeper came increasingly to Winnipeg's farm team , the Tulsa Oilers , in the Central Hockey League , for which he played exclusively in the 1981/82 season and for which he was 50 Playing on the ice stand.

On September 24, 1982 Mattsson signed a contract as a free agent with the Minnesota North Stars , for which he was then only used twice in the NHL, where he succeeded in a shutout . In the further course of the season he was used exclusively for Minnesota's CHL farm team Birmingham South Stars and was finally given on February 1, 1983 in exchange for a third-round vote for the 1985 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings . For this he completed 38 games in the NHL in the following year and a half, was in the 1983/84 season mainly for the Kings farm team, the New Haven Nighthawks , in the American Hockey League on the ice. He then returned to his Finnish homeland and played for Tappara Tampere until the end of his career at the age of only 29 following the 1986/87 season . He led Tappara to win the Finnish championship twice in a row and he was able to convince especially in the 1985/86 season , in which he was elected to the All-Star Team of the SM-liiga.

International

For Finland Mattsson took part in the junior division at the U19 European Junior Championships in 1974 and 1976 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1976 World Cup , as well as the Canada Cup in 1976 and 1981 .
