history

Jordal Amfi , home of Vålerenga Ishockey until 2017

In the 1940s, the ice hockey department of Vålerenga IF was founded, which initially achieved success primarily at junior level. In 1947 the club's juniors won the Norwegian championship and established themselves at the top of the table for the next ten years. Between 1956 and 1961, the young players won another five championship titles. This laid the foundation for a successful men's team that used the newly built Jordal Amfi as its home ground and quickly reached the top division of Norway. In 1960 the club won its first Norwegian championship title and dominated Norwegian ice hockey in the 1960s. Previously, another club from Oslo, Gamlebyen IF , had shaped Norwegian men's ice hockey in the 1950s . This role was taken over by Vålerenga IF under the leadership of Tor Gundersen , who won the Golden Puck in 1960 .

In the decades that followed, the club won numerous championship titles, making it one of Norway's most successful club teams.

During the lockout in the National Hockey League , Chris Mason and Scott Hartnell played for the club. Other former well-known players of the club are Serge Boisvert , Johan Åkerman and Sergei Puschkow . Patrick Thoresen and Mats Zuccarello Aasen played as juniors for Vålerenga.
