history

The ice hockey division of IL Sparta Sarpsborg was founded in 1958. With the Sparta Amfi Arena, which was newly built in 1962, the club was able to celebrate its greatest success to date, as the team was promoted to the 1st division this year . The success was short-lived, however, as the club found itself in the 2nd divisjon after the brief interlude in the late 1960s and early 1970s .

In the 1980s, Sparta managed to establish itself in the highest ice hockey league and under coach Lasse Bäckman the club won its first championship in 1984. In 1989 the team won the championship for the second time.

In 1995 the club had its blackest hour after years of financial problems and filed for bankruptcy. As a result, the club was relegated to the 3rd division. But this setback didn't stop the Warriors and three years later the team reported back to the House of Lords of Norwegian ice hockey and since 1997 the team has been playing there continuously.

In 1984, 1989 and 2011 the Sparta Warriors won the Norwegian championship.

In March 2017, the Sparta Warriors met the Storhamar Dragons in Hamar . The game ended only in the eighth extra time with a 2-1 win for the Dragons. At 217 minutes and 14 seconds, it was the longest game in ice hockey history.
