Mark Astley (born March 30, 1969 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian - Swiss ice hockey player who played for the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League from 1987 to 2007 .
Career
Mark Astley began his career as a hockey player with the Calgary Canucks, for which he was active in the Alberta Junior Hockey League in the 1987/88 season . He then attended Lake Superior State University for four years , for whose ice hockey team he was active parallel to his studies in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . With his university team he won the CCHA championship in 1991 and the NCAA championship title a year later . From 1992 to 1994 the defender played for HC Lugano and HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A for one year . Towards the end of the 1993/94 season he made his debut for the Buffalo Sabers , who had selected him in the tenth round as a total of 194 players in the National Hockey League during his studies in the NHL Entry Draft in 1989 . There he also spent the following two seasons, where he was in the 1994/95 season mostly for Buffalos farm team Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League on the ice. The 1996/97 season was spent by the 1994 Olympian with the Phoenix Roadrunners from the International Hockey League .
For the 1997/98 season Astley returned to his former Swiss club HC Lugano in the NLA. With the team he won the Swiss championship title in the 1998/99 and 2002/03 seasons . He spent the 2004/05 season at Lugano's league rivals SCL Tigers . He last played for the NLA participant EHC Basel from 2005 to 2007 .
International
For Canada Astley took part in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , where he won the silver medal with his team.
