The IIHF Continental Cup 2006/07 was the tenth edition of the of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . The tournament, which was held from September 22, 2006 to January 7, 2007, was attended by 19 teams from 19 countries. The final round was held from January 5th to 7th, 2007 in Székesfehérvár , Hungary .

Three finalists were set, the host Alba Volán Székesfehérvár as well as Ilves Tampere from Finland and the HK Awangard Omsk from Russia , as representatives of the highest placed countries according to the IIHF world rankings 2006, which had registered for the tournament. The other finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

qualification

First round

The first round games took place from September 22 to 24, 2006. The Romanian capital Bucharest acted as the venue for Group A and the games of Group B were played in Belgrade . Of the eight registered teams, however, two could not compete, which were then replaced by teams playing out of competition. In addition, a team did not travel with the minimum of 15 field players and two goalkeepers, which means that their games were also not counted.

Group A

In Group A, the Armenian representative Uratu HC and his team could not take part in the event due to suffering from food poisoning . In order to compensate for the loss, those responsible hired the Romanian team from CS Progym Gheorgheni for the tournament. However, the games Gheorghenis did not count towards the tournament.

Ultimately, the tournament host Steaua Bucharest prevailed against the two remaining comrades-in-arms and qualified for the second round. In the decisive and final group game, they beat HK Slavija Ljubljana just 5: 4. Ljubljana also moved up after HK Acroni Jesenice had decided not to participate in the run-up.

Group B

Group B, which took place in Belgrade, only saw hosts HK Partizan Belgrade and Polis Akademisi Ankara fight for a place in the next round. The Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb did not travel with the IIHF required minimum of 15 players and two goalkeepers, whereupon the games were not included in the rating. In addition, the Belgian representative White Caps Turnhout canceled his participation. Partizan's local rival HK Red Star Belgrade stepped in as a replacement , whose games were also not counted.

Thus progress in Group B turned into a farce, as Partizan Belgrade and Ankara faced each other in the only relevant game of the weekend. Partizan won this completely unequal game 20-0.

Group D

The Group D tournament, which was played at two venues, was won by the Kazakh club HK Kasachmys Satpajew , who, like Salzburg in Group C, laid the foundation for the tournament victory in the first group match against the hosts from Krakow. On the following two tournament days, both won their games and thus occupied the first two positions. The qualifier from Bucharest finished in third place, while CG Puigcerdà from Spain landed in last place with no points and a goal difference of 3:28.

Third round

The third round of the Continental Cup took place from November 17th to 19th, 2006 in Minsk , Belarus . In addition to the host, the three winners of the second round took part in the tournament.

Group F.

In the semifinals, the three qualifiers from the previous round met host HK Junost Minsk . HK Kasachmys Satpajew and the hosts remained free of loss points on the first two match days , so it was only in the final group game - the clash of the two undefeated teams - that it was decided who should reach the Super Final . With a narrow 2-1 win in extra time , Minsk finally prevailed and left Satpajew, EC Red Bull Salzburg and HK Sokol Kiev behind.

A total of 14,200 spectators attended the six tournament games.
