Gábor Ocskay junior [ ˈɡaːbor ˈotʃkɒ.i ] ( Hungarian Ocskay Gábor ; born September 11, 1975 in Budapest , † March 25, 2009 ibid) was a Hungarian ice hockey player . During his career he played exclusively for Alba Volán Székesfehérvár between 1993 and 2009 . He also played 187 games for the Hungarian national team and is considered one of the most successful Hungarian players of all time.
Career
Ocskay, who was born in the Hungarian capital Budapest, played for the first time in 1993 - at the age of 18 - for Alba Volán Székesfehérvár in the top Hungarian division . Before that, he had already represented the country's junior team at international tournaments several times.
In the following years, the trained center was one of the best players in the country and also played a key role in the national team. After he was promoted from group C to group B with the national team as part of the 1998 world championship tournaments , he was able to celebrate the first championship title since 1981 with Alba Volán the following year. Although the Hungarian national team rose with him only one year later, he was relegated to the C group, but after only one more year he was promoted to the second-class group, which has now been renamed Division I.
The striker also continued to collect titles at national level and won eight of nine possible national championship titles with the team from Székesfehérvár between 2001 and 2009, although a heart muscle disease was diagnosed in 2004 , but it did not stop him, four months after the diagnosis to celebrate a successful comeback. The Hungarian also played in the national team, with which he was promoted to the A group of the World Cup in 2008 - after 70 years in the second and third division. In addition, he finished the first qualifying round for the 2010 Winter Olympics as the player with the highest points in his country, which meant that he played a key role in reaching the second qualifying round.
On March 25, 2009, Ocskay died of a heart attack at the age of 33 . Just the weekend before, he had prepared a goal in the decisive victory for Alba Voláns' tenth championship title. The Gábor Ocskay memorial tournament was named after him. The ice rink in which Alba Volán Székesfehérvár plays is now called Ifjabb Ocskay Gábor Jégcsarnok ( German Gábor Ocskay Junior Ice Rink ).
