The IIHF Continental Cup 2001/02 was the fifth edition of the of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . The final round was held in Zurich in January 2002 .
Only the host club, the ZSC Lions Zurich , was set for the final tournament. The three other participants were determined in three qualifying rounds.
Attendees
A total of 49 teams from 27 European countries took part in the competition for the Continental Cup.
First round
The tournaments of the first qualifying round were played from September 21 to 23, 2001 at six venues. The respective tournament winners qualified for the second round.
Group A
The group A tournament was held in İzmit , Turkey . Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk clearly prevailed with three wins and reached the second qualifying round.

Group E
The Group E tournament was held in Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via , France , as the Spanish host club, the CG Puigcerdà , did not have a suitable venue. While the hosts only took the last place in the tournament, the Dragons de Rouen clearly prevailed with three wins and reached the second qualifying round.

The games in Group G were in Italian Milan held. The host HC Milano Vipers beat HDD Olimpija Ljubljana 3-1 in the last tournament game and thus reached the third qualifying round.

The matches of Group J were in Polish Oswiecim discharged. The host Dwory SSA Unia Oświęcim prevailed with two wins, while the team of HK Vojvodina Novi Sad was disqualified. Due to injuries, she had only come to the tournament with eleven field players and one goalkeeper and therefore did not meet the required minimum number of players.

Group K
The group K tournament was held in Prostějov , Czech Republic . The host HC Prostějov defeated the team of GKS Katowice in the decisive final tournament game 4: 2 and thus achieved both group victory and the third qualifying round. The game between HK Acroni Jesenice and GKS Katowice was canceled after the first third when the score was 0: 1 after the president of HK Jesenice had physically attacked the Czech main referee. In the first third Jesenice had played twelve minutes short and received the goal. The game was rated 5-0 in favor of Katowice.

Final round
In addition to the host and defending champion ZSC Lions Zurich, the following teams qualified for the final tournament of the Continental Cup in Zurich's Hallenstadion :
- The Milano Vipers sat down in the second round in the home tournament against HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , Ust-Kamenogorsk and Klagenfurt and in the semi-final tournament in Asiago against HC Asiago , the HC Lugano and HC Minsk by. Milano finished runner-up in Italy last season.
- The Slovak champions HKm Zvolen prevailed in the home tournament against the Czech second division club HC Prostejov , against the Polish master Dwory SSA Unia Oświęcim and against the German second division club ERC Ingolstadt .
- The Finnish second division team Jukurit Mikkeli won the tournament in Oslo against hosts Vålerenga IF Oslo , the London Knights and the French representative from Anglet. Previously, the "black horses" won the home tournament in Mikkeli tied with Storhamar IL and HK Riga 2000 . Jukurit was the champion of the Finnish second division, the Mestis , last season .
The winner of the tournament received 60,000, the second 40,000, the third place 30,000 and the team in fourth place 20,000 Swiss francs .

After HC Ambrì-Piotta , which won the competition in 1998 and 1999, the ZSC Lions Zurich also won the Continental Cup for the second time in a row. Against the team from Milan , who prevailed 4-2 in the semifinals against the Slovak champions HKm Zvolen, the Zurich team lived up to their role as favorites. Coach Pekka Rautakallio's team laid the foundation for defending their title in the first third, when Petr Jaks and Gian-Marco Crameri made the preliminary decision with two goals within eleven seconds with a score of 1-1 . The best attack line of the Vipers with the Canadians Jim Hiller , Scott Beattie and Patrice Lefèbvre only managed one goal in the first third.
