Mathias Seger (born December 17, 1977 in Flawil ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player . From the 1999/2000 season to the 2017/18 season he played for the ZSC Lions in the National League A in the position of defender .
Career
Seger began his career at EHC Uzwil before playing for SC Rapperswil-Jona in the National League A between 1996 and 1999 . He made his NLA debut in 1996; in his first season he formed a defender pair with the Finn Kari Martikainen . He then took third place in the choice of the best newcomer. Since 1999 he has been a regular with the ZSC Lions, with whom he became Swiss champions in 2000, 2001, 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2018 and won the IIHF Continental Cup twice (2000 and 2002). Furthermore, Seger won the Champions Hockey League with his team in 2009 .
Seger took over the captaincy of the ZSC Lions for the 2005/06 season as the successor to Mark Streit . In the 2009/10 season he achieved a total of 51 points scorer in 48 qualifying games, which was the best career result for the Swiss national player. The following season 2010/11 did not go as desired with a plus / minus value of -25 over the entire season, which meant the worst value in the team of the city of Zurich. Seger missed the start of the 2011/12 season due to a cheekbone fracture that he suffered from a punch from SCB player Johann Morant . In the playoff final series against SC Bern , he scored the winning goal for the ZSC Lions in overtime of the fifth game, who won the series against the Bernese 4: 3 after a 3-1 deficit. His contractual relationship with Zurich was extended to the end of the 2016/17 season. On September 30, 2016, he completed his 1079th NLA game and thus became the new record holder.
Immediately after winning the championship with the ZSC Lions in spring 2018, he ended his playing career. On the occasion of the farewell, the Aargauer Zeitung described him as "a unique piece in the best sense of the word, one of the greatest Swiss hockey players".
Seger was considered an offensive defender who took on a leadership role on the ice and was widely viewed as a key player in the ZSC Lions.
His jersey number 15 was banned by the ZSC Lions after his career ended.
Between January and April 2019 he was Arno Del Curto's assistant trainer at ZSC.
In 2020 Seger was elected to the IIHF Hall of Fame .
