Arno Del Curto (2015)

Arno Del Curto (born July 23, 1956 in St. Moritz ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player and today's coach . From 1996 to 2018 he was the coach of HC Davos . Most recently, he trained the ZSC Lions from January 14, 2019 until the end of the 2018/19 season .

Career

As a player Del Curto was for the EHC St. Moritz and GC (now GCK Lions ) in the first league , the third-highest Swiss league, and for the Zürcher SC in the National League B in use. A serious injury (ankle fracture) forced him to end his playing career early at the age of 21.

After Del Curto had headed various teams in the amateur leagues as head coach in Buochs, Reinach and Küsnacht, he took over a team in a professional league for the first time in 1990 with SC Herisau in the second highest Swiss division. The following year, he was engaged by the Zurich SC, whose team he spent three seasons (1991-1993) in the National League A headed. In November 1993 he accepted an offer from EHC Bülach and also coached HC Luzern and the Swiss U20 national team over the next two years .

For the 1996/97 season, Del Curto signed with HC Davos , where he was the head coach without interruption until November 2018. He won the championship six times with the team (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2015), was runner-up three times (1998, 2003 and 2006) and won the Spengler Cup three times . In November 2018 HC Davos announced the resignation of Del Curto after 22 years in office.

In January 2019, Arno Del Curto signed with the ZSC Lions , where he was the direct successor to Serge Aubin as head coach. Del Curto did not succeed in the further course of the 2018/19 season to lead Zurich into the championship round, which had last been the case for the ZSC 13 years earlier. Subsequently, he did not receive a contract extension in Zurich.

classification

Arno Del Curto demands hard, fast and intelligent ice hockey from his team. He often relies on young players to whom he gives a relatively large amount of ice age: Reto von Arx , Michel Riesen , Björn Christen and Beat Forster became top performers and national players under him. In Davos he was considered the "sole ruler" and the most important decision maker. He has been described as an exception in professional ice hockey, as a free spirit, non-conformist and “monument of Swiss sport”.

Private

Del Curto has two grown children.
