Michel Riesen (born April 11, 1979 in Oberbalm ) is a Swiss ice hockey coach and former player who, among other things, made twelve appearances in the National Hockey League with the Edmonton Oilers . He was also four times Swiss champion with HC Davos .

Career

Riesen began his career as an ice hockey player at SC Lyss . As a professional player, the right winger played from 1994 in National League A at EHC Biel , where he was relegated to National League B in the first season . In the 1997/98 season he switched to HC Davos , back to the top Swiss league. He had previously been selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 14th place by the Edmonton Oilers . After one season and 32 games for HC Davos, the right-handed shooter made his debut in North America with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League in 1998 . The time in Hamilton brought him some high points in his career: in the 1999/2000 season, for example, he achieved 60 points scorer in 73 games. In the 2000/01 season he was used twelve times in the National Hockey League by the Edmonton Oilers. On July 1, 2001, he was the first Swiss ever to be part of a transfer deal in the National Hockey League. The Edmonton Oilers transferred Giant to the St. Louis Blues together with Doug Weight in exchange for Marty Reasoner , Jochen Hecht and Jan Horáček . After this year, his third in North America, he moved back to Switzerland, where he went hunting for goals again for HC Davos. In the following eight years, up to 2009 , Riesen won the Swiss championship title four times with Davos . Although his contract ran until 2011, he moved to the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers for the 2009/10 season . After another four years in the National League A , Michel Riesen moved to the EHC Basel Sharks before the 2013/14 season .

In 2015 he became a member of the coaching staff at HC Davos, where he initially took on the task of shooting coach and then heading the elite juniors. After Arno del Curto's resignation as Davos coach in November 2018, Riesen stepped in as a transition coach. Shortly thereafter, a new head coach was signed with Harijs Vītoli ,š , whose assistant was giant.

International

Michel Riesen played his first game for Switzerland at the 1996 World Junior Championship . A year later at the U18 European Junior Championships in 1997 , he was appointed to the All-Star team and voted best striker of the tournament. In 1997 and 1998 he was also a member of the national team at the Junior World Championships. In 1998 he won the bronze medal with the Swiss. Before and after his time in the AHL, he also appeared at the Ice Hockey World Championships . In total, he was on the ice in eight competitive games for the Swiss national team .
