The HC Luzern is a Swiss ice hockey club from Lucerne , which was founded in 1998 and today in the fourth-rate second league plays. The club plays its home games in the regional ice center in Lucerne (until 2013 Swiss Life Arena), which holds 5,200 spectators. The club maintains partnerships with the juniors of EV Zug , SC Reinach and EHC Engelberg .
history
HC Luzern was founded in 1998 as the successor club to SC Luzern , which was dissolved due to financial problems and initially played its home games in the Tribschen artificial ice rink, which was completely renovated as the Swiss-Life Arena.
The association only needed 250,000 Swiss francs to survive, which, according to a newspaper report in the Neue Luzerner Zeitung dated October 5, 2010, was refused by the city of Lucerne as a support contribution.
The club quickly rose to the 2nd division and has since been fighting for promotion to the 1st division, which has always been missed. Against opponents like arch rivals EHC Seewen , HC Ceresio or SC Weinfelden , the team failed in the play-off final at the latest.
The club is suffering from a dwindling audience due to the unsuccessfulness and great competition from the football club FC Luzern .
After four seasons under Thomas Balada (change as assistant coach to 1st division EHC Seewen ), the Slovak Milan Mrukvia was the new head coach in the 2012/13 season with the aim of leading the partly newly formed team into the playoffs.
With a 3-2 win over the first division club EHC Uzwil , HC Luzern qualified for the first main round of the 2019/20 Swiss Cup on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 and thus celebrated the greatest success in its 21-year club history. On the way there, the HCL survived a total of six qualifying rounds and eliminated two other higher-class clubs (both teams from the 1st division) with HC Prättigau-Herrschaft (4: 2) and EC Wil (4: 0). This means that the HCL remains the only second division team in the cup and can hope for a well-known opponent from the National League or Swiss League in late summer 2019.
