The observation railcar 137 240 and three years later the almost identically constructed 137 462 and 463 were diesel railcars of the Deutsche Reichsbahn for excursion traffic.

History / technology

After the two "Transparent Trains" ET 91 had been in use successfully since 1935, the Deutsche Reichsbahn had a diesel multiple unit built for use on non-electrified routes by the same manufacturer, the Fuchs Waggonfabrik in Heidelberg . The drive motors were two 8-cylinder boxer diesel engines from DWK , each with 180 hp, which, together with the cooling system and an air compressor, were attached to the undercarriage in a separate frame to absorb sound. The power was transmitted hydraulically by means of a Voith fluid transmission fixed to the bogie frame .

The car body , together with the two driver's cabs, formed a single large area with wide windows, the backrests of the 60 upholstered seats could be turned so that all passengers could sit facing the direction of travel. The roof had a roll top and roof edge glazing. The strength of the frame was compensated by a framework construction made of tubes and profiles. The two toilets were arranged very low next to the driver's desks and had oval windows in the fronts.

In 1939 two more railcars were built, they were given the numbers 137 462 and 463.

The vehicles were very popular with the public, but less so with the staff: the roll-up top jammed more often, and engine damage and cardan shaft breaks occurred several times.

The 137 462 was destroyed in a bomb attack in 1944. The two remaining observation railcars were taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn and operated as VT 90 500 and 501. In 1953/54 the vehicles were equipped with new Büssing U 15 diesel engines and compressed air disc brakes. The VT 90 500 was mainly used in the Hunsrück and Moselle areas as well as in the Cologne / Aachen area and was based in Cologne-Nippes. He was retired on April 13, 1960. In Baden-Wuerttemberg and Upper Bavaria, the last Stuttgart-based VT 90 501 was used and retired on March 22, 1962.
