history

The SC Herisau was founded in 1942 and initially played its home games on the Herisau military area between the barracks and today's sports center. Eighteen years after it was founded, the club moved to neighboring St. Gallen in the Lerchenfeld, where the teams of SC Herisau played in the 1960s and 1970s. It was not until 1974 that SC Herisau was able to move into the new sports center on Kasernenstrasse. At this time the club was playing in the 2nd division, but a short time later SC Herisau rose to the 1st division and in 1981 they were promoted to the NLB . The club's president at that time was the later Federal Councilor Hans-Rudolf Merz , during whose chair the club played in the NLB for several years.

At the end of the 1984/85 season the club was relegated to the first division, but managed to get promoted again a year later. Players during this successful period included Dave Delich , Björn Kinding , Giovanni Conte , Arno Del Curto , Olli Hietanen and Lance Nethery . Thanks to the success of the first team, SC Herisau also made a name for itself in national ice hockey. A euphoria arose in Herisau and the youth department produced some seasoned players such as Jörg Eberle and Jonas Hiller .

In the 1996/97 season the SC Herisau achieved the greatest success in the club's history. Against Grasshopper Zurich , the SC won the NLB championship and was allowed to move up to the National League A as part of the increase . However, the rise of SC Herisau to the NLA brought the club into financial difficulties. As a result of the necessary renovation and expansion of the ice rink, the club ran into liquidity problems and after only one year was relegated to the elite class. For the 1998/99 season the company was renamed SCH Säntis , which the board hoped would provide better loyalty and support in the region. Since the new name had caused confusion due to inconsistent spelling in the media, the management rejected the renaming after only four months, starting with the 1999/2000 season . The president of the sports center, Richard Kunz, described the financial situation in 2001 with the following words: “We are doing badly, we ran out of money; the year was a tightrope walk between closure and continued existence. " The bankruptcy followed from the financial difficulties in 1999 and the club withdrew from the NLB to the first division.

In the following season, the first team was able to win the championship of the 1st division. Then the SC Herisau was taken back into the NLB, but due to ongoing financial difficulties, the club withdrew to the 2nd division before the 2001/02 season. Since then, SC Herisau has been consolidating and trying to train young ice hockey players with good youth work and later to integrate them into the first team. In December 2006, the renovation of the sports center on Kasernenstrasse was completed, so that the club has appropriate training conditions available. At the end of the 2008/09 season they were promoted to the first division.
