Johann Morant (born April 7, 1986 in Belfort ) is a French ice hockey player who has been under contract with EV Zug in the National League since the 2014/15 season .

Career

Morant, who was born in Belfort , went through his entire junior career in the offspring of HC Ajoie . In the 2002/03 season he made his debut for the Jura in the National League B . In 2005 he switched to Grenoble Métropole Hockey 38 , where he came mainly for the first team in Ligue Magnus , in addition to appearances for the junior team . After only one season he moved on to HC Mont-Blanc , where he also worked for the youngsters and for the first team. He won the French championship with the U22 team in the 2007/08 season.

After the triumph he returned to Switzerland in the National League B for HC La Chaux-de-Fonds , where he developed into a seasoned player over the next three seasons. In January 2011, Morant, after leaving the NLB playoffs, was transferred to SC Bern , where he only played one game until the end of the season. Due to a shoulder injury, he missed almost the entire 2011/12 season , and made headlines in the third game of the playoff final against the ZSC Lions when he stormed ZSC defender Cyrill Bühler, hit him with fists and knocked over a linesman. For this action Morant was punished by National League single judge Reto Steinmann with 14 game suspensions and a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs .

After this unfortunate season, Morant moved to HC Lugano . But even there he stayed no longer than a season and was handed over to Lausanne HC after the season . The French defender also left this club after one season. He moved to EV Zug , where he has been in action since the 2014/15 season , which he almost completely missed due to a knee injury. In the 2015/16 Champions Hockey League , Morant drew attention to himself again negatively with a fight. In the game against the Kölner Haie he beat an opponent bloody. In the same season he also received the inglorious award of the NLA player with the most penalty minutes (116).

Due to sufficient appearances in Swiss junior leagues, Morant plays with a Swiss license and therefore does not fall under the foreign contingent in the National League.

Morant, who was seen primarily as an aggressor at the beginning of his time in the National League, has in the meantime blossomed into a seasoned and recognized defender. He is known for his emotionally charged game.

International

Morant recorded his first international appearances at the U18 World Cup in 2004 for the U18 selection of the French national team , which he and his team finished in fifth place. He also took part in two U20 World Cups, namely in 2005 and 2006. He made his first appearances for the senior team in the 2011/12 season. However, it was never enough for the defender to be invited to a World Cup.
