Raphael Diaz (also Raphael Díaz ; born January 9, 1986 in Baar ) is a Swiss ice hockey player of Spanish descent who will be under contract with EV Zug in the Swiss National League A again at the start of the 2016/17 season . His sister Daniela was also an ice hockey player and now works as a trainer.

Career

Raphael Diaz began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth division of EV Zug, for whose professional team he made his debut in the National League A in the 2003/04 season . Before that, he had played for the A-Juniors of EV Zug in the Elite Junior A-League for three years. In his rookie year , the defender scored two goals in 43 games and provided one assist. Until the end of the 2010/11 season he played exclusively in the NLA for EV Zug, where he had a regular seat. Due to his rise to one of the best Swiss defenders in 2010, there was speculation about an exit. However, Diaz extended his contract with Zug until 2016, with the contract containing an exit clause for the NHL. In May 2011 he signed a two-way contract for one year with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League and was able to secure a regular place in defense in his first season with the Canadiens. Diaz scored his first goal on October 18, 2011 in the home game against the Buffalo Sabers . For the time of the NHL lockout 2012/13 Diaz returned to his home club EV Zug.

On February 3, 2014, he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Dale Weise , who in turn handed him over to the New York Rangers a month later, shortly before the trade deadline, in exchange for a vote . His contract in New York was not renewed after the end of the season, so Diaz was again looking for a new employer. He found this on October 6, 2014 when he signed a one-year contract with the Calgary Flames . After that year in Calgary, Diaz returned to the New York Rangers as a free agent . These gave him to the Hartford Wolf Pack as part of the preparation for the 2015/16 season . Diaz spent almost the entire season in the American Hockey League and therefore signed a new five-year contract with EV Zug in December 2015, to which he returned for the 2016/17 season.

International

With the Swiss national ice hockey team , Diaz took part in the 2004 U18 Junior B World Championship and the 2005 and 2006 U20 Junior World Championships . He was also part of the Swiss squad at the 2008 and 2011 World Championships and took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the silver medal with it. After further appearances at the World Championships in 2016 and 2017 as well as the Olympic Winter Games in 2014 and 2018 , Diaz again won the silver medal at the World Championships in 2018 .
