David John McIntyre (born February 4, 1987 in Oakville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with EV Zug in the Swiss National League since the 2016/17 season .
Personal
David McIntyre grew up in the village of Pefferlaw, Ontario on Lake Simcoe , about 70 kilometers north of Toronto . In his youth he played for the York Simcoe Express , where well-known names like Connor McDavid and Sam Bennett were later active. McIntyre studied economics at Colgate University and graduated in 2010.
Career
Beginnings in college hockey
McIntyre's career began with two respectable seasons in the Ontario Junior Hockey League at the Newmarket Hurricanes , so as a result Scouts of the Dallas Stars were aware of the teenager. In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Texans in the fifth round in 138th place. Rather unusual for a Canadian player, McIntyre decided against a career in the local junior leagues and enrolled at Colgate University in New York State , where he studied in ECAC Hockey , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). , to play. During his four years at the university, he appeared several times in the league's all-star teams and became the leading player on his team. After finishing his studies, the attacking player had now ended up in the organization of the New Jersey Devils , after he had previously been handed over to the Anaheim Ducks by the Dallas Stars for Brian Sutherby . The Californians, in turn, exchanged him for Sheldon Brookbank from the Devils.
First professional positions in the AHL
In March 2010, McIntyre finally made his debut for the farm team , the Lowell Devils , in the American Hockey League (AHL). There followed a first full season with the Devils, who had since moved to Albany . In June 2011 the organization of Minnesota Wild secured the rights to the Canadian in exchange for Maxim Noreau . First games for the farm team, the Houston Eros , were successful and so he was called up for seven games in the NHL team. Against Jaroslav Halák and the St. Louis Blues , McIntyre scored his first and so far only goal in the North American elite class. In the following years he could not recommend himself to the Wild, nor over the Grand Rapids Griffins for further assignments in the NHL. His career in North America stagnated and McIntyre decided to move to the defensive Finnish Liiga , where his skills as a two-way striker should come to better advantage.
Breakthrough in Europe
With the average team Saimaan Pallo , he followed a good first season with a strong second. In the internal league scoring he finished second and, together with Chad Rau, was one of the decisive factors for the team's good performance.
During the preparations for the 2014/15 season , EV Zug became aware of the defensive attacker during a game in the Champions Hockey League when he was named player of the game in a duel with the team from Central Switzerland and scored the winning goal. In April 2016, EV Zug finally announced the move to the National League A for the first two years . In the first season the Canadian became one of the strongest players in the team and the league. Especially with his sometimes outstanding performances in the play-offs, he led his team to the championship final, which will be played in April 2017.
In December 2017 he scored a goal in the final when he again won the Canadian selection at the Spengler Cup .
Style of play
David McIntyre is known to be a fast skater who has a good overview and can read the game. He is a team player who first tries to find a better positioned teammate before he looks for a deal himself. For a two-way striker, however, there is still room for improvement in his defensive play, as he has mainly focused on his offensive qualities in recent years.
