The Colgate University is a private liberal arts college in Madison County of New York. It was founded in 1819 as a Baptist seminary, but is no longer confessional .

history

In 1817 the "Baptist Education Society" was founded by thirteen men under the motto " 13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13 articles ". Just two years later, New York State officially recognized the school program. Regular school operations started in 1820. Due to the motto, the number “ 13 ” is still a good omen today .

In 1823 prominent New York City Baptists such as William Colgate (founder of Colgate-Palmolive ) moved their ministerial seminars to Hamilton to found the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution . With this step, the Colgate family's involvement in the school began.

In 1846 the name of the school was changed to Madison University . When the attempt to move Madison University to Rochester failed due to a legal dispute in 1850 , non-conformist trustees , lecturers and students founded their own university, the University of Rochester .

After the Colgate family supported Madison University for seven decades, the name was changed in 1890 in honor of William Colgate and his sons. James Boorman Colgate secured the university's financial basis with the establishment of the Dodge Memorial Fund (share capital US $ 1,000,000). In 1928 the theological branch of Colgate University merged with Rochester Theological Seminary to form the Colgate Rochester Divinity School . The Colgate was thus free from political and religious influences.

It was not until 1970 that girls and women were allowed access to Colgate University.

Colgate was one of the first sponsors of the Partnership for Community Development , whose goal was economic development and growth in the region.

Media coverage

In 2006, Newsweek named Colgate one of the top new universities in the United States. It is on the list of one hundred best colleges for gay and bisexual students. In October 2006, Colgate was voted the 2nd most athletic college in America. The campus is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country and in 2005 was awarded fifth place in the “StudentsReview” survey. It was ranked third in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education when it rated its success in integrating African American students.

Education

Colgate offers 53 undergraduate studies that can be completed with a Bachelor of Arts . The three most popular subjects are biology , economics, and political science . In addition, Colgate has large faculties in foreign languages , physics , history , psychology , neuroscience, and geology .

Colgate offers a Master of Arts degree in education , but only 5-10 students complete it per year.

In addition to the regular 23 “campus study groups” take place every year. These groups include visits to Australia , the People's Republic of China , Japan , India , some Western European countries, Washington, DC and the National Institutes of Health . About two-thirds of Colgate undergraduate students come from abroad. This is a high percentage when compared to other colleges and universities in the United States. More than 95% of the graduates then attend other universities for postgraduate studies, especially in law , administrative law , engineering , medicine and art.

Sports

About 80% of students take an active part in Colgate's sports activities. 25% of all athletes are in the athletics university selection. There are a total of 25 national teams, more than 40 sports club teams and 18 different specialist sports groups. The athletes Colgate play in 23 NCAA Championships in Division I . In all sports except ice hockey, Colgate is a member of the Patriot League . The men's and women's ice hockey teams play in the ECAC hockey .

For a long time the sports teams were called “Red Raiders”. For the origin of this name, both the college colors (red and brown) and the “reference” to the traditional opponent, Cornell University “Big Reds” come into question. In the 1970s, a change in the name and mascot (which featured an Indian) was discussed. There were concerns that either could offend the "Native Americans". The mascot was then redesigned by a native inhabitant. It showed a hand holding a torch. The name was kept unchanged at that time. In 2001 a group of students suggested another name change. The school agreed to delete the word “Red” from the name from the 2002 season. However, some local souvenir shops still offer discontinued items with the old logo and the words "Red Raiders". In 2007 the mascot was renewed again.

In the years 1989–1990, Colgate was the smallest college that reached the "NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship Tournament Final" in the NCAA Division I, where they lost to the University of Wisconsin .

The football team has played in the "NCAA Division I-AA" ( Division I FCS ) since 1982 and reached the play-offs in 1982, 1983, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2005.

The Cornell University is a traditional "permanent rival" in all sports. Ice hockey games against Cornell are major events on campus. The Colgate teams (with the exception of football, golf, hockey) also compete annually against Syracuse University . The Colgate and Syracuse were once bitter rivals in football, but the division of the divisions in the late 1970s organically ended that rivalry. The teams only met again in 1981, 1982 and 1987.

Rowing club rudder blade

In the summer of 2007, the rowing team reached the semi-finals of the Henley Royal Regatta in England by winning against Trinity College and Oxford Brookes University . The rowers were the only sports team in Colgate history to win a national championship (2004).

campus

The first buildings, including the "West Hall", the oldest building on campus (built in 1827), were built by students and lecturers from stones from the college's own quarry . The majority of the newer buildings were optically based on these old buildings. The most prominent building on campus is the chapel, which is used today for lectures, concerts and church services.

accommodation

The accommodation of the students is regulated based on their length of study. All freshmen move into rooms “up the hill”, close to the academic buildings. There is also the West Hall, which is now used as a student residence. From their sophomore year at Colgate, students can live in up the hill dormitories or apartments on campus. Last year around 250 "senior students" have a free choice and can also spend the night outside the campus.

media

The campus weekly Colgate Maroon News is the oldest university newspaper in the United States. It was founded in 1868 as "Madisonesis" and "merged" in 1991 with the newspaper "Colgate News". The “Colgate Maroon News” reports on campus news and activities, sports, as well as art and other topics.

"WRCU-FM" the Colgate radio program is entirely the responsibility of the students during the semester and broadcasts on the 90.1 FM frequency. During the semester break, the station takes over content from the State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego).

The television channel "CUTV" shows both in-house productions by the students and feature films.

music

There are four a cappella groups at Colgate, two of which have achieved national renown. The "Colgate Thirteen", founded in 1942, is one of the oldest all-male a cappella groups in the country. The "thirteen" say the national anthem at the American Football "Super Bowl XIII" final in 1979.

The "Swinging 'Gates", which consists of sixteen women, was founded in 1974. The group shares many of its traditions with the “thirteen” and was mentioned in the Sports Illustrated magazine: “ 16 women, with voices to die for ”.

Traditions & Legacy

Due to the motto of the founders, the number "13" is considered a lucky number in Colgate. The positive attitude towards thirteen can be seen, among other things, in the address "13 Oak Drive" or the number of members in the Senior Honor Society "Konosioni". The Konosioni recognizes outstanding achievements in the spirit and spirit of Colgate. It was founded in 1932 through the merger of two " secret societies ". Every year 26 students with equal rights (13 for each society of origin) are appointed to the Konosioni for one year.

In 1932, the Colgate football team was the only college team in history to finish the season 9-0 undefeated. In 1936, the Colgate swim team traveled to Fort Lauderdale for the first time to do spring training in a casino pool. This trip developed into a regular tradition, which was later followed by other colleges and from which the spring breaks result.

The "University Rugby Football Club" was founded in 1967 and is the oldest sports club in Colgate. He plays in the "New York State Rugby Football Conference, Division II". Their home games take place on the "Academy Field", near Oak Drive on campus.

At Ellis Iceland National Monument, an anti-immigration explanation of the eighth President of Colgate (1922-1942), is George Barton Cutten attached. There you can read: " the danger the 'melting pot' brings to the nation is the breeding out of the higher divisions of the white race .... ". The question of how a president with such views could stay at the helm of Colgate for twenty years, and how to deal with this legacy, is a controversial issue at Colgate to this day.

About a third of the entire student body belong to student associations. Six fraternities and three sororities are active on campus .
