In the National League B of the 2002/03 season , the EHC Basel won the NLB championship with a 3-2 series in the play-off final against EHC Visp . Since no play-outs were carried out in the National League A , the EHC Basel rose to the NLA without relegation games, which was carried out with 13 teams in the following season .

The 10 teams played 2 double rounds of 18 games each. After that, the top eight teams determined the 'B-Masters' playoff style. Quarter-finals , semi-finals and the final were each played according to the Best of Five mode .
