The 1984/85 season was the 38th regular staging of the National League B , the second highest Swiss league in ice hockey . The six best-placed teams qualified for the NLA relegation , in which the Zürcher SC , HC Ambrì-Piotta , HC Sierre and EHC Olten achieved promotion. The SC Herisau , SC Langenthal , EHC Wetzikon and the EHC Visp were relegated to the third highest division, the first division.

In the main round, each of the 14 teams played 26 games. The six best-placed teams qualified for the NLA relegation. The remaining eight teams contested a relegation round, the last four of which were relegated directly to the third division. The points from the main round were carried over to the relegation round. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.
