The 1986/87 season was the 40th regular staging of the National League B , the second highest Swiss league in ice hockey . The SC Langnau and the EV train went directly into the National League A on. The EHC Dübendorf and the EHC Grindelwald were relegated directly to the third highest division, the first division.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played 36 games. The four best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs, the finalists of which both went straight to the NLA. The last two in the main round were relegated directly to the third division. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.
