The 2008/2009 season was the 62nd regular hosting of the second-class Swiss National League B . The Swiss NLB champion was the fifth time in the history of the HC Lausanne club . Due to a lack of interest, no team from the 1st division had been promoted to the National League B.
Attendees
The target size of 14 teams could not be achieved because the EHC Chur and HC Martigny withdrew from professional ice hockey. The NLB 2008/09 was played with eleven teams. In addition, as in previous years, each team played a home game against the Swiss U20 national ice hockey team .
The following twelve teams belonged to the second division in the 2008/09 season:
mode
The eleven teams played two double rounds of 20 games each, as well as one game against the Swiss U20 national team. After that, the seven best teams carried out a simple placement round for the standings after qualification (additional six games). In the hope round, the other four teams determined the last playoff participant. The best eight teams after the 47 qualifying games competed for the Swiss B champions in play-off style, with the first four teams in the table being allowed to choose a quarter-final opponent.
Quarter-finals, semi-finals and final were each played according to the best-of-seven mode . The winner of the final played a relegation in best-of-seven against the loser of the NLA play-outs . For the teams that missed the playoffs, the season ended early because there were no relegation games between the NLB and the first division.
