James Desmarais (born May 4, 1979 in Montréal , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has played for the Belfast Giants in the Elite Ice Hockey League since 2015 .
Career
James Desmarais began his career at Lac St. Louis (QAAA) and played as a junior in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League for the Laval Titan and the Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda . At that time he was selected in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues in the ninth round as 270th. In the three seasons from 1999 to 2002 he was active in the American Hockey League for the Worcester IceCats , a farm team of the Blues, and for the league rivals Springfield Falcons . The Canadian was also on the ice in the United Hockey League for BC Icemen and in the East Coast Hockey League for the Peoria Rivermen , Arkansas RiverBlades , Reading Royals , Dayton Bombers and Greensboro Generals . In the 2002/03 season he switched to the Italian HC Alleghe in Europe for the first time . After a year in Italy, he returned to North America, where he experienced another season with numerous club changes. In addition to another guest appearance in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons, he was also active in the UHL with the Adirondack Ice Hawks and in the Québec Semi-Pro Hockey League with the Prédateurs de Granby . The 2004/05 season he completed in the jersey of the Dragons de Verdun in the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey .
In the 2005/06 season Desmarais returned to Europe and played for HC Innsbruck in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League . He was the third top scorer (35 goals and 39 assists) in the league. After failed negotiations with HC Innsbruck, he finally signed for the Swiss second division club HC Ajoie for the 2006/07 season . After leaving the playoffs, James Desmarais signed for the remaining games with the Austrian club EHC Black Wings Linz until the end of the season and played his first game for Linz on March 23, 2007. In the 2008/09 season Desmarais moved to EHC Biel for the playouts after HC Ajoie had left .
He finished the 2012/13 season behind top scorer Marco Truttmann as the second-best point collector in the National League B, both of whom had 84 points in 50 qualifying games. Desmarais, who was the league's most successful assists with 58 assists, was named the most valuable player in the second-highest Swiss division at the end of the season .
