Final (competition)

As a final ( s. ) (Swiss: Final ( m. )) At competitions referred to any kind of passage of the race in which the winner of the whole competition is determined. Depending on the type of competition, one also speaks of the final , final round or final battle .

Elimination rounds can be carried out as part of the competition to qualify for the final. The elimination rounds preceding the final are often referred to as semifinals or semifinals . In competitions held in the knockout system , the rounds preceding the semi-finals are often referred to as quarter-finals , round of 16, etc. If a round is set up to place the participants who were eliminated directly before the final (for example the game for third place in the soccer world championships ), this is often colloquially referred to as a " small final ".

The participants in a final are called finalists.
