Bruno Steck (born March 16, 1971 in Langnau ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player . His career kick started the then 19-year-old Emmentaler 1990 at SC Langnau in the National League B . During his 15-year professional career, he played as a right defender 581 championship games in a total of six clubs. His greatest successes include winning the IIHF Continental Cup in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002 , winning the IIHF Super Cup in 1999 and the Swiss championship title with the ZSC Lions in 2001 . In 2005 he announced his retirement from professional ice hockey. After his career, he will support the Swiss U16 and U18 national teams as a team manager.

Career

In the summer of 1990, Steck was signed for the first team at SC Langnau. At the age of 19, he made his debut in National League B , the second highest league of Swiss ice hockey , with the number 5 on his back . Steck was used as a right defender from the start. In his first season he spent 26 minutes in the penalty box and scored five points scorer .

In his second year as a professional, Steck changed clubs. He joined the ranks of SC Lyss with the new shirt number 26, also playing in the NLB , in the 1991/92 season as a defender . During the championship round he contributed nine points scorer to the second place of SC Lyss. From 1992 onwards, Steck played for HC Martigny for two years . In one game he lost eleven teeth in one fell swoop, but was not missing in any game and with 21 scorer points in both years contributed significantly to reaching the playoffs.

In 1994 the Zurich ice-skating club became aware of the defender and signed Steck for three years. In his first season in the top division , Steck scored two goals and three assists for Zurich. They just reached the playoffs in the 1994/95 season with eighth place and were eliminated early - according to the course of the season - in the quarter-finals against EV Zug . In the following season, Steck was again able to contribute five scorer points, and as in the previous year, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the playoffs. In the following season , the “Zätt” made it to seventh place. Steck was also able to improve and was able to be credited with seven scorer points, but as in previous years, the ZSC had to admit defeat in the quarter-finals - this time against SC Bern .

A year later , the defender signed a contract with HC Ambrì-Piotta and played there under coach Larry Huras with the shirt number 46, as teammate John Fritsche had the number 26. Numerous friendships resulted from this time to this day, including those with John Fritsche. In the 1997/98 season, the Leventines were defeated in the battle for the Swiss championship title by the eventual Swiss champions EV Zug in the semi-finals, in a 4-3 series. This season Ambrì-Piotta won the IIHF Continental Cup with Steck for the first time - as the first Swiss team ever.

In the following season, the Leventines managed a superior championship preliminary round with a first place after the preliminary round. Steck contributed 20 scorer points to the success - his career high. Ambrì finished the 1998/99 season as runner-up behind canton rivals HC Lugano . In the 1999/2000 game year , the Leventines could no longer match the success of the previous year nationally. Steck's record was also more modest, with eleven scorer points in 33 games. Internationally, however, things went better with HC Ambrì-Piotta, they won the IIHF Continental Cup again and the IIHF Super Cup in the same year . After differences between Larry Huras and the president of HC Ambrì-Piotta had already existed at the beginning of 1999, the successful coach left Leventina in 2000 for Zurich. A short time later, rumors began to circulate that Steck would accompany Huras to the ZSC Lions . Less than a month later, the change was officially confirmed.

Steck succeeded in confirming the championship title with the ZSC in the 2000/01 season and the defender had a positive plus / minus value of +4 this season . His team won the IIHF Continental Cup again. In the following season, Steck reached the playoffs again with the ZSC. The Lions were runner- up behind HC Davos , but defended the Continental Cup they won last year. Steck was considered a friend of Huras and when his contract expired in 2002, the defender also received no more offer from the Lions.

When HC Lausanne submitted an offer to the defender, Steck signed a three-year contract in early April 2002. The 2002/03 season was sportily desolate for the left-handed shooter, as the LHC was bottom of the table. A player transfer scandal about Friborg-Gottéron prevented the threatened relegation - the playout was not played out this season. The next season was also similar. In 30 appearances in 48 championship games, Steck scored two goals and nine assists for the French-speaking Switzerland. Nevertheless, the Lausanne team only finished eleventh and had to go to the play-outs. Thanks to a victory against the newly promoted EHC Basel , the French-speaking Swiss managed to save themselves in fourth place in the relegation games, while Steck injured his knee in this game. Steck had to end the season early when he tore a cruciate ligament in the championship game against the SCL Tigers. In preparation for the 2004/05 season , Steck suffered another cruciate ligament rupture and was thus forced to end his career early, while HC Lausanne could no longer avert relegation to the NLB.

In his free time, Steck continues to indulge his passion for ice hockey with other alumni and was a voluntary member of the parish council of the Reformed Church in Utzenstorf until 2019.
