Petri Johannes Varis (born May 13, 1969 in Varkaus ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who plays as a striker. He was selected in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round as 132nd by the San Jose Sharks .
Career
After starting his professional career in the Finnish I-divisioona with Karhu-Kissat , Varis played his first games in the SM-liiga with Ässät Pori . After two seasons with Ässät, Jokerit signed the left-wing striker, with whom he has now been hunting for goals for seven years. With Jokerit, Varis won the Finnish championship four times and the European Cup twice.
In 1997 Varis moved to North America, where he spent a season with the Indianapolis Ice in the IHL . He was allowed to enjoy the NHL for a game when he played for the Chicago Blackhawks . After this overseas guest appearance, he joined the Cologne Sharks in the German ice hockey league for the 1998/99 season, only to play for Jokerit again after a year. After a two-year appearance in Switzerland, he returned to the Finnish league, where he has been chasing the puck at Jokerit ever since. He scored a total of 271 goals in the SM Liiga and seven goals in seven European Cup games. (As of June 2008)
Varis was also a player in the Finnish national ice hockey team and won the bronze medal in the ice hockey competition in Lillehammer in 1994 .
