Andy Sertich (born May 6, 1983 in Coleraine , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player with Croatian citizenship. Since 2016 he has played for the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League on the position of defender .
Career
Clubs
Andy Sertich was born in Coleraine , Minnesota , USA . His family comes from the Croatian region of Lika . He began his ice hockey career in the 2001/02 season with the Sioux Falls Stampede from the junior league United States Hockey League . By the Pittsburgh Penguins Sertich was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2002 in the fifth round in 136th place. In the summer of 2002, the defender joined the University of Minnesota ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association , where Thomas Vanek , Paul Martin and Phil Kessel played , among others . He stayed there for four years, becoming champions of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in 2003 and 2004 and NCAA champions in 2003. He then moved in 2006 to the Utah Grizzlies , the farm team of the New York Islanders in the ECHL .
In the course of the 2007/08 game year Sertich came to work with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the American Hockey League , which were also in cooperation with the Grizzlies and Islanders. In the 2008/09 season he was again mainly used in Utah. The Croatian ice hockey club KHL Medveščak Zagreb signed Andy Sertich for the 2009/10 season . At the capital club he was one of the players with the most scorer points within the team for the next two years. In 2011 he became Croatian champion for the first time with Medveščak and was able to defend this title with his team in the two following years. After the team from Zagreb announced its move to the Continental Hockey League , he went to the EC Graz 99ers in May 2013 and thus stayed in the Austrian Ice Hockey League. After he had asked to terminate his contract in late October or early November, he was transferred to Alba Volán Székesfehérvár within the league on November 6, 2013 . In the summer of 2014 he moved to the Dornbirn EC , for which he was on the ice for a season. He spent the 2015/16 season with the Stavanger Oilers , with whom he became Norwegian champions . He then moved to Great Britain, where he played with the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League and won the Continental Cup with the club in 2017 .
International
He made his debut for the Croatian national team at the 2012 World Cup in Division II, where he was the top scorer of the tournament as a defender with seven goals and, together with the Estonian Aleksandr Petrov, was also the second best scorer behind his compatriot Joel Prpic . A year later he was promoted to Division I with the Croatian team. This time he was named the best defender of the tournament. In Division I, he played for the Balkan team in 2015 and 2017 . He also took part in the Olympic qualification for the 2014 Games in Sochi .
