The 2016/17 season was the 26th season of the Latvian Ice Hockey League , the highest Latvian ice hockey league . The HK Kurbads became champion for the first time in the club's history , after the team had previously been runner-up several times.

In the main round, the seven teams played 30 games each. Each team received three points for a win after regular time, each team received two points for a win after overtime, one point for a loss after overtime and zero points for a defeat after regular time. The two best-placed teams qualified directly for the semi-finals of the playoffs, in which the champions will be played out, while another four teams determined the two other participants in the semi-finals in the play-off quarter-finals.
Attendees
Of the participants from the previous season, the syndicate HS Riga 99 / HK Tukums left the league. As a new participant Pārdaugava Riga was added, who had previously played in the second division 1st division.

Main round
The main round of the Latvian ice hockey league comprised 30 game days, began on September 6, 2016 and ended on March 1, 2017.
With 24 wins from 30 games, the HK MOGO prevailed and, together with the HK Kurbads, made it into the playoff semi-finals.

Play-offs
The play-offs began on March 4, 2017 with the fourth-finals between HK Liepāja and HS Riga as well as HK Zemgale and HK Prizma Riga . In the final, HK Kurbads were already 3-0 down in the best-of-seven series before winning all four subsequent games and becoming Latvian champions for the first time.
