Oļegs Sorokins (born January 4, 1974 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a former Latvian ice hockey player who has worked as a coach since retiring. He has been the head coach of the Latvian U18 national youth team since 2017. In the course of his career he played in a variety of European and North American leagues, including Dinamo Riga in the Continental Hockey League , Ässät Pori in the Finnish SM-liiga and Metallurg Novokusnezk , Friborg-Gottéron and HC Slovan Bratislava .
Career
Oļegs Sorokins began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at HK Pardaugava Riga , for which he was active from 1991 to 1995 in the Latvian ice hockey league and the Russian super league. The defender then spent a season at Juniors Riga in the East European Hockey League . During the 1996/97 season he was under contract exclusively in North America , where he ran up for the Jacksonville Lizard Kings and Roanoke Express in the East Coast Hockey League , and the Quad City Mallards and Utica Blizzard in the Colonial Hockey League . He bridged the summer break with the Empire State Cobras from the professional inline hockey league Roller Hockey International .
After Sorokins had started the 1997/98 season at his ex-club Juniors Riga in EEHL, he played for the Finnish teams Hermes Kokkola and Vaasan Sport in the then second-class I divisioona for the next three years . This was followed by a season each at HC Slovan Bratislava in the Slovak Extra League and Molot-Prikamje Perm in the Russian Super League . The 2002/03 season began Sorokins at HK Riga 2000 , before he ran up in the following three seasons for Ässät Pori from the Finnish SM-liiga . The 2005/06 season began the Latvian again at HK Riga 2000, with which he competed in the Belarusian extra league. After only 15 games in which he scored a goal and prepared three more, he signed a contract with EHC Black Wings Linz , for which he was initially on the ice in the Austrian ice hockey league the following year .
In November 2006 Sorokins moved to Södertälje SK in HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division. With his club he reached promotion to the Elitserien , but again did not stay for a long time with a club and played in the 2007/08 season for Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the Russian Super League, Friborg-Gottéron in the Swiss National League A and Frederikshavn White Hawks in the Danish AL-Bank Ligaen . For the 2008/09 season , the 2002 Olympian was signed by Dinamo Riga from the newly founded Continental Hockey League , but he also made four appearances for its farm team, HK Riga 2000, in the Belarusian Extra League .
In October 2010 he moved to WSV Sterzing Broncos from the Italian A2 series . With the Sterzinger Broncos he won the Serie A2 championship at the end of the season and thus rose to the first-class Serie A , but left the club after this success. In the following season he was initially active in his Latvian homeland for SMScredit.lv before he was committed in January 2012 by HK Saryarka Karaganda from the Kazakh ice hockey championship and collected 7 scorer points in 16 games. In the 2012/13 season he worked as a player-coach at SMScredit.lv from the Latvian ice hockey league and won the Latvian championship with the club at the end of the season. After the end of the season, the main sponsor of the club withdrew, so that this stopped the game.
In the 2013/14 season Sorokins was without a club before he joined the HK Mogo as a player and assistant coach for the 2014/15 season. With the HK Mogo he won his third championship title in 2015. Between 2015 and 2018 he was the head coach of HK Mogo and also played a few games for the club and for Venta in 2002 in the second-class 1st division. In 2017 he finally ended his career and became the head coach of the Latvian U18 national junior team. With this he made it back to the top division at the World Cup of Division I 2018 , a year later he finished eighth with the U18 national team. Since 2018 he has been looking after various teams at the HS Riga ice hockey school .
International
For the Latvian junior national team , Sorokins took part in the Junior C World Championship in 1994 , in which the Latvian juniors took just second place behind Slovakia and thus missed promotion to the B World Cup.
He made his debut for the Latvian men's national team in March 1995 , but was not used regularly until the early 2000s. He played for the national team at the 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2007 and 2009 World Championships . He was also in the Latvian squad at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver .
In total, Sorokins has completed 127 international matches, in which he scored 6 goals and prepared 28 more.
