The 1991/92 season was the first season of the Latvian Ice Hockey League , the highest Latvian ice hockey league . HK Saga Kekava Riga became champions for the first time in the club's history .

In the main round, the 14 teams were divided into two groups. In the main round, each team played a game against each group opponent, with the four best-placed teams in each group qualifying for the final round. The two first-placed players contested the championship final. The remaining six teams contested a placement round. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
