The 1996/97 season was the sixth season of the Latvian Ice Hockey League , the highest Latvian ice hockey league . LB / Essamika became champion for the first time in the club's history . Daugava Riga , Hanza Riga and Laterna Riga were relegated to the second division.

mode

Each of the eight teams played a total of 20 games. Champion was the first placed in the final round. The last three placed in the relegation round were relegated to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
