Latvijas Bērzs ( German  Latvian Birch ) is a Latvian ice hockey club from Riga , which became serial champions of the Latvian SSR in the 1970s and 1980s .

history

In the early 1960s, the furniture manufacturer Latvijas Bērzs , today Latvijas finieris , founded an ice hockey team that took part in the amateur championship of the Latvian Soviet Republic from 1962. She was able to win this ten times in the 1970s and 1980s.

In the season 1978/79 and 1979/80 Latvijas Bērzs played in the second Soviet ice hockey league , the Pervaya League , but rose in 1980. In the mid-1970s and early 1980s, the club's first team took part in the third division of the Soviet Union , the Wtoraja League .

From 1995 the club formed a syndicate with HK Essamika Ogre . This became Latvian champions in the 1996/97 season . After this success, a new syndicate was founded with HK Prizma Riga , which initially only existed in the 1997/98 season. Then the syndicate with the team from Ogre was reactivated for two seasons. In 2000 they returned to Prizma Riga as a partner team.

Since 2002, in addition to an amateur team that plays in the second division, the club's junior teams have been taking part in the game, whereby these usually form syndicates with HK Saga Riga . Today there is a sports school in Riga under the name Latvijas Bērzs.
