Ģirts Ankipāns (born November 29, 1975 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a former Latvian ice hockey player . Since 2017 he has been the general manager and head coach of Dinamo Riga from the Continental Hockey League .
Career
Ģirts Ankipāns began his career with Vendenieki in 1991 before going on the ice for HK Essamika Ogre between 1992 and 1995 . This was followed by two and a half years at Juniors Riga before he moved to Germany for Braunlager EHC . Further stations in the second and third division of Germany were the EHC Neuwied , the EC Timmendorfer Strand , the EV Füssen and the EV Landshut .
Between 2003 and 2008 he played for the Latvian top club HK Riga 2000 in the Latvian ice hockey league and won several Latvian champions with them. In the 2006/07 season he also played a few games for HK Dinamo Minsk in the Belarusian championship . For the 2008/09 season he joined Dinamo Riga from the newly formed Continental Hockey League and played for Dinamo until the middle of the 2012/13 season. He then ended his career and became an assistant coach at Dinamo.
International
Ģirts Ankipāns participated in several international tournaments for Latvia. In 1995 he took part in the U20 World Cup of Division II with the U20 selection of his home country. In the senior sector, it was used at the 2003 , 2005 , 2009 and 2011 World Championships . He was also a member of the Latvian squad at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and 2010 in Vancouver .
As a trainer and functionary
After his engagement as assistant coach at Dinamo, he was assistant coach at Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod between 2015 and 2017 and initially looked after the Latvian U20 national team, in the 2016/17 season then the Latvian men's national team as assistant coach.
He has been General Manager at Dinamo Riga since 2017, and also head coach of the club since the end of September.
