Lauris Dārziņš (born January 28, 1985 in Riga ) is a Latvian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Dinamo Riga in the Continental Hockey League since January 2014 .
Career
Lauris Dārziņš began his career as a hockey player at HK Lido Nafta Riga before moving to Finland in 2001 and playing for the juniors of the Finnish first division club Lukko Rauma until 2004 . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2003 in the ninth round as a total of 268th player by the Nashville Predators , for which he however never played. After playing for the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League from 2004 to 2006 , the Latvian returned to Finland. In the 2006/07 season he first played for Ilves Tampere in the SM-liiga , but ended the season at Vsetínská hokejová in the Czech extra league . In the following season, the attacker was first used in a game by the Czech first division club HC Oceláři Třinec , before he spent the rest of the season at HK Homel from the Belarusian extra league .
In the summer of 2008 Dārziņš received a contract in his Latvian homeland with Dinamo Riga from the newly formed Continental Hockey League . At Dinamo Dārziņš developed into a leading player and was the top scorer and top scorer of his team in the 2010/11 season both in the main round and in the playoffs. The performances shown caught the attention of other KHL clubs, so that he left Dinamo Riga and was signed by Ak Bars Kazan in May 2011 .
From June 2013 Dārziņš was under contract with HK Traktor Chelyabinsk , but was released in December of the same year and returned to Dinamo Riga in January 2014.
International
For Latvia Dārziņš took part in the U18 Junior B World Championships in 2002 and 2003 , as well as the U20 Junior B World Championships in 2003 , 2004 and 2005 . He was also in the Latvian squad at all A World Championships since 2006 and at the 2010 Winter Olympics .
