history
The Louisville Icehawks from the East Coast Hockey League were four years after their formation following the 1993/94 season to Jacksonville, Florida, relocated and renamed Jacksonville Lizard Kings. After a year of preparation, the team started playing in the ECHL for the 1995/96 season. Their most successful season completed the team in their premiere season, in which they moved in fifth place as the last team of the South Division in the regular season playoffs for the Kelly Cup , where they first defeated the Louisiana IceGators , before they won against the Richmond Renegades and Toledo Storm only lost to the Charlotte Checkers in the Kelly Cup final with a sweep in the best-of-seven series . Subsequently, the team could no longer build on this success and only reached the playoffs in the 1998/99 season, but failed in the first round.
After five seasons, the Lizard Kings were dissolved in 2000 after the construction of their own arena could not be financed.
