David Cunniff (born October 9, 1970 in South Boston , Massachusetts ) is a retired American ice hockey player and current coach . During his career, he completed 120 games for the Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League between 1997 and 2000 . Since 2015 he has been the assistant coach of the Iowa Wild in the AHL. His father John Cunniff played 65 games in the World Hockey Association and was, among other things, head coach of the US national team and the National Hockey League .

Career

Cunniff played in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's gaming operations during his college years at Salem State College . For the 1996/97 season - at the age of almost 26 - the American finally switched to the professional field and played in his first season for the Jacksonville Lizard Kings and Raleigh IceCaps in the East Coast Hockey League . For the IceCaps, Cunniff also completed large parts of the 1997/98 game year, but also made four first experiences in the American Hockey League at the Albany River Rats , which were looked after by his father during this time. From the 1998/99 season, the trained left winger was then an integral part of the roster of the River Council. He played a total of 120 games for the team in which he scored five goals and 20 assists , but also spent 219 minutes in the penalty box. After he had suspended the entire 2000/01 season, he dared to make a comeback attempt in the ECHL with the Louisiana IceGators and Richmond Renegades for the following season . In his last season he played in only 24 games and then finally ended his career as an active.

Following his professional career, Cunniff followed in the footsteps of his late father. He was signed as an assistant coach by the Cleveland Barons from the AHL. There he worked under head coach Roy Sommer . For the 2006/07 season , the Barons moved to Worcester in the US state of Massachusetts and renamed themselves Worcester Sharks . Even so, Cunniff stayed in the coaching staff with summer. In the end, Cunniff stayed eight years as an assistant coach in Worcester until he joined the Albany Devils in the same position in the 2014/15 season. After just one year, he also moved to the Iowa Wild as an assistant coach , which he took over as head coach on an interim basis in February 2016 after John Torchetti replaced Mike Yeo, who was dismissed from the Minnesota Wild . After the end of the season, he returned to the position of assistant coach of the Wild.
