Igor Borissowitsch Koroljow ( Russian Игорь Борисович Королёв ; born September 6, 1970 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ; † September 7, 2011 in Tunoschna near Yaroslavl ) was a Russian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the St. Louis Blues during his career , Winnipeg Jets , Phoenix Coyotes , Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks played in the National Hockey League .

Career

Igor Korolev began his career as a hockey player at HK Dynamo Moscow , for which he was active in the Russian Super League from 1988 to 1992 . With Dynamo he was Soviet champion in 1990 and 1991 , and in 1992 champion of the CIS . He was then selected in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as a total of 38th player from the St. Louis Blues , for which he played the following two years in the National Hockey League .

After the attacker had started the 1994/95 season because of the lockout in the NHL at his ex-club HK Dynamo Moscow, he was transferred to the Winnipeg Jets before the start of the NHL season in January 1995 , for which he spent the following two seasons on the Ice cream stand. In the 1996/97 season , the Russian also ran for their successor team, the Phoenix Coyotes . Korolev then played for four years for the Toronto Maple Leafs and three years for the Chicago Blackhawks , before returning to his Russian homeland during the renewed lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , where he was on the ice for Locomotive Yaroslavl . Even after this season, the winger stayed in Russia, where he was under contract with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk for the next three years . With Magnitogorsk he won the Spengler Cup in 2005 , the championship in 2007 and the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2008 . Before the 2008/09 season Korolev moved to Atlant Mytishchi , for whom he played in the Continental Hockey League in the 2008/09 season . He then went on the ice for Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the KHL for one more season before the Russian ended his career. They hired him for the 2011/12 season as an assistant coach. On September 7, 2011, he was killed in a plane crash near Yaroslavl .

International

For Russia , Korolev took part in the 1992 World Cup and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey . He also played in the prestigious previous event - the Canada Cup in 1991  - for the USSR . He had also represented this at the European Junior Championships in 1988.
