The Saint Petersburg Ice Palace ( Russian Ледовый Дворец ) is a multifunctional hall in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg . The arena is used for various sports, such as ice hockey , basketball , volleyball and boxing . The capacity of the hall depends to a large extent on how it is used, with 12,300 spectators for ice hockey games.
history
The ice rink was an important project in the renovation of the sports buildings in the city of St. Petersburg. Until the hall was built, there were only sports halls from the Soviet era such as the SKK Peterburgski from 1979. Thus, the bid to host the 2000 Ice Hockey World Championship was just the right thing. Construction began in 1998 and construction was completed in 2000.
Today the hall is used by the KHL ice hockey team of the SKA Saint Petersburg , which plays its home games here.
Stadium details
The complex includes a five-story building with a usable area of 37,000 m². There are 74 boxes in the ice rink, which are laid out between the upper and lower tier around the playing field. The height from the hall floor to the hall roof is 22 meters. In the middle of the stadium hangs a video cube weighing several tons with four 12 m² (3 × 4 m) screens , which allow spectators sitting further away from the field to follow the game.
New construction plans for SKA Saint Petersburg
In August 2018, SKA Saint Petersburg announced plans to build a new ice hockey arena at the start of the KHL season. The billionaire and club president Gennady Timchenko hopes that the construction for a planned 254 million euros will be completed by 2023 and, if Russia is awarded in 2019, games of the ice hockey world championship will be played in 2023 . With 22,500 seats, it should be the largest ice hockey arena in the world, where regular games take place. The Bell Center in Montreal is currently the largest permanently used ice hockey rink with a capacity of 21,000.
