Fredrick Brathwaite (born November 24, 1972 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach , who played 255 games for the Edmonton Oilers , Calgary Flames , St. Louis Blues and among others between 1989 and 2012 Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League and 216 games for Adler Mannheim in the German Ice Hockey League . He has been the goalkeeping coach of the New York Islanders from the NHL since summer 2017 .

Career

Brathwaite, whose parents come from Barbados , began his professional career for the 1989/90 season with the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League , where he was on the ice up to and including the 1991/92 season. In addition, the left catcher also completed some games for the London Knights , who were also active in the OHL, this season . In the 1992/93 season Brathwaite ran then on with the Detroit Junior Red Wings , before he switched to the Edmonton Oilers franchise in 1993/94 .

There the Canadians completed two games back in the American Hockey League active Cape Breton Oilers , but he came into this season also 19 games for the NHL team the Oilers. In the 1995/96 season , the goalkeeper again completed games in the AHL for Cape Breton and in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers, before he finally ran up between 1996 and 1998 for the Manitoba Moose in the International Hockey League . In the 1998/99 season Brathwaite played for the first time for a Canadian national team before he decided to move to the Calgary Flames . There the goalkeeper was able to end the season with a remarkable 31 NHL games, in the 1999/00 season he succeeded, apart from two appearances at the Saint John Flames in the AHL, the breakthrough in the NHL. For the Calgary Flames, the Canadian completed 61 games, in 2000/01 Brathwaite completed another 49 NHL games for Calgary , but then switched to the St. Louis Blues , for which he was rarely on the ice in the highest North American professional league. Even with the Columbus Blue Jackets , the goalie did not get beyond the role of the substitute and only received 21 appearances, and he was also able to book three appearances in the Syracuse Crunch from the AHL. During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Fred Brathwaite played with Ak Bars Kazan in the Russian Super League and finally decided after the end of the strike against a return to the NHL and continued to play in Kazan . In 2006 the Canadian returned to North America, where he first played in the AHL for Chicago Wolves . The 2007/08 season began Brathwaite in Chicago , before a return to Russia, this time to his Avangard Omsk decided.

From 2008 to 2012 Fred Brathwaite was under contract with Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League . At the end of February 2009 the goalie was voted Germany's ice hockey player of the year 2008/09 by the coaches and managers of the DEL clubs as well as by journalists. Furthermore, the specialist magazine Ice Hockey News awarded him Goalkeeper of the Year 2008/09.

After his playing career, Brathwaite became goalkeeping coach for the team from Mannheim and worked for the Canadian ice hockey association Hockey Canada as a consultant for goalkeeping matters. In the summer of 2014 he ended his engagement in Mannheim and worked exclusively as the goalkeeping coach of the Canadian U-national teams. He has been the goalkeeping coach of the New York Islanders from the NHL since summer 2017 .

International

With the Canadian national team , Fred Brathwaite played the 1999 , 2000 and 2001 World Championships . He couldn't win a medal.
