Career
Juuso Välimäki was born in Tampere and grew up in neighboring Nokia . In his hometown he went through the youth department of Tampereen Ilves , for whose U20 he was on the ice in the 2014/15 season in the A-Junior-SM-liiga , the highest junior league in Finland. As a result, the defender decided to move to North America, so the Tri-City Americans signed him from the Western Hockey League (WHL), which had selected him in the 2015 CHL Import Draft in 14th position. After an average rookie year, he significantly increased his personal statistics for the 2016/17 season, he recorded 61 points scorer in 60 games and was consequently elected to the WHL West Second All-Star Team . In addition, the Calgary Flames considered him in the NHL Entry Draft 2017 in 16th place and equipped him a little later, in July 2017, with an entry contract .
Nevertheless, Välimäki returned for another season to the Americans in the WHL, in which he confirmed his performance from the previous year and was again considered in the Second All-Star Team of the Western Conference . As part of the preparation for the 2018/19 season, the Finn finally won a place in the Calgary Flames squad and made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2018 . He is also a regular member of the Flames' farm team , the Stockton Heat , in the American Hockey League (AHL).
International
On an international level, Välimäki represented his home country for the first time in the context of the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2014 , before winning the bronze medal with the Finnish youth at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2015 . At U18 level, he took part in the U18 World Championships in 2015 and 2016 , where the silver medal was first won before he led the team to the world championship title as captain the following year . At the same age, the defender was also part of the Finnish squad at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament . The U20 national team then represented Välimäki at the U20 World Championships in 2017 and 2018 , but the team missed the medal ranks in each case.
