The European Winter Youth Olympic Festival 2015 ( European Youth Winter Olympic Festival in 2015 ), took place from 25 to 30 January 2015 in Vorarlberg ( Austria ) and Liechtenstein instead. It was the 12th winter edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival , a biennial multisport event for young athletes from Europe, with the event being held in two host countries for the first time. The most successful nation was Germany with 20 medals won. However, since Russia won two more silver medals, Germany only took second place in the medal table. For the first time in the history of the festival, entry to all events and competitions was free. A total of around 20,000 visitors attended the competitions.

Most of the sports competitions were held in existing facilities and sports facilities. Only at the Montafon ski jumping center was a new stadium built for the opening ceremony. In Austria:

symbolism

mascot

The festival's mascot was the marmot Alpy , which is native to the Alps and symbolizes the local fauna and nature. In addition, the presentation includes, according to the organizers "to preserve the environment and available exclusively sustainably planned resources in the implementation of major sporting events such as the Youth Olympic Games to use." The name is made up of ALP for Alps and Y (for Youth German  Youth ). In addition, the name with the letters A and L contains the first letters for Austria ( German  Austria ) and Liechtenstein. The mascot was designed by students from the HTL Dornbirn . The first draft came from Marianna Ganahl. Alpy is dressed in leather pants and color elements from the two host countries, i.e. red, blue and white.

Logo and slogan

The logo contains a shooting star in the Olympic colors as a symbol of fascination and energy. The slogan of the event "Rock The Alps!" Was the result of a Facebook vote.

Olympic fire

The Olympic flame was carried from school to school through the host region from January 21 to 23, 2015. The design of the torch comes from the HTL Bregenz . Pupils from the respective target schools accompanied the fire on its final meters. The torch relay ended in the Montafon Nordic Sports Center in Tschagguns , where the opening ceremony took place on January 25th.

Well-known or former athletes advertised the youth festival before the event and during the sports competitions. In addition to the alpine ski racers Tina Weirather Christina Ager , Marcel Mathis , Rainer Salzgeber , Patrick Ortlieb , Anita Wachter and Marco Büchel , these were also the ice hockey player Reinhard Divis and the cross-country skier Philipp Hälg . Snowboarders Alessandro Hämmerle and Markus Schairer are also among the supporters. Ulrich Wohlgenannt promoted ski jumping .
