Alessandro Hämmerle (born July 30, 1993 in Frauenfeld ) is an Austrian snowboarder . He starts in the snowboard cross discipline.

Career

Alessandro Hämmerle comes from a sporty family: his brothers Michael and Luca (* 1996) are also active as snowboarders. His nickname is "Izzi". He attended the Dornbirn sports high school and graduated from high school together with the ski racer Christine Scheyer .

From 2007 to 2011, Hämmerle mainly competed in the European Cup, where he won the overall snowboard cross ranking in the 2010/11 season . He drove his first World Cup race in December 2010 in Lech am Arlberg , which he finished in 43rd place in snowboard cross.
At the Snowboard Junior World Championships 2012 in Sierra Nevada he won gold in snowboard cross. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he achieved eighth place in Montafon for the first time a top 10 placement in the World Cup. In February 2013 he won his first World Cup victory in Sochi . This was followed by more top ten placements, including third place at the World Cup race in Veysonnaz . At the Snowboard World Championships 2013 in Stoneham , he achieved sixth place in snowboard cross. In March 2013 he won silver in snowboard cross at the Snowboard Junior World Championships 2013 in Erzurum, Turkey . He finished the season in fourth place in the overall snowboard cross standings. In the following season Hämmerle could not repeat its strong performances from the previous season.

His best result in the 2013/14 season was 27th at the World Cup race in Veysonnaz . In his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , he came in 17th place. At the Snowboard World Championships 2015 in snowboard cross, he finished fifth in Kreischberg . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he won the World Cup in Montafon . This was followed by five top 10 placements in the World Cup, including two third places in Veysonnaz and finally second place in the Snowboard Cross World Cup. In the 2016/17 season he won Solitude and Bansko . He also achieved third place in Bansko and Feldberg and at the end of the season he came third in the Snowboard Cross World Cup. In March 2017, Hämmerle won the snowboard cross team competition in Veysonnaz in the last race of the season with Markus Schairer in the World Cup. At the season highlight, the 2017 Snowboard World Championships in Sierra Nevada , he came in eleventh place. In December 2017, Alessandro Hämmerle took second place in the snowboard cross world cup race - at the "home race" in Schruns in the Montafon.

Alessandro Hämmerle started at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the South Korean city ​​of Pyeongchang and finished seventh in snowboard cross as the best Austrian on February 15. At the World Cup in La Molina , Spain , on March 3, he celebrated his first win of the season and improved from third to second in the overall World Cup standings. In the 2018/19 season , he secured overall victory in the SBX World Cup for the first time. He won in Baqueira-Beret and took second place in Veysonnaz .

At the Snowboard World Championships 2019 in Park City , he finished 16th in February. In November 2019, Hämmerle won the state championship in snowboard cross from his brother Luca as part of a European Cup race on the Pitztal Glacier. In December, Alessandro Hämmerle won his eighth World Cup victory and his second success in Montafon after 2015. The 26-year-old won the season finale in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, in March 2020 and thus successfully defended his overall World Cup victory in snowboard cross.
