The 20th Women's Ice Hockey World Championships of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2017 . Between December 10, 2016 and April 21, 2017, a total of 37 national teams took part in the five tournaments of the top division and divisions I to II. In addition, five national teams took part in a qualifying tournament for Division II B, which was held in December 2016 in Taipei , the capital of the Republic of China (Taiwan) .

The world champion was for the eighth time overall and for the fourth time in a row the United States team , which defeated Canada 3-2 in extra time in the final . The German team counted to the surprise of the tournament and reached the semi-finals as last year's climbers. After defeats against the eventual world champions and Finland , fourth place was the best World Cup placement to date. The Switzerland managed to avert the transition to Division IA and finished seventh in the provisionally discharged relegation round. With second place in Group A of Division I, the team from Austria narrowly missed promotion to the top division and, with tenth place overall - as in 2015 - achieved its best place ever.

The top division of the world championship was held from March 31 to April 7, 2017 in the US city of Plymouth in the state of Michigan . The game was played in the two halls of the USA Hockey Arena with 3,504 seats (Hall I) and 800 seats (Hall II). A total of 20,034 spectators attended the 22 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 910 per game.

Eight national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two performance-graded groups of four teams each. The four semi-finalists from the previous year made up group A. The numbers in brackets indicate the positions in the IIHF world rankings .

In the run-up to the tournament, the nominated players of the US team considered boycotting the tournament after the US association refused to give the women's team major support and salary payments in non-Olympic years. Only when the men's team showed solidarity did the association give in. The women's team then rejected the boycott.

During the tournament, there were numerous notable game outcomes in the preliminary round. In Group B, promoted Germany was able to win its first two games against Sweden and the Czech Republic, which surprisingly qualified them as group winners for the quarter-finals. In Group A, Canada lost 3: 4 to the Finns on the second day of the tournament. It was the Canadians' first defeat in a world championship against any nation other than the United States. As a result, however, it was the German team that continued to surprise the competition. With a 2-1 quarter-final victory over Russia, a promoted team reached the semi-finals for the first time. In addition, it was Germany's best result in the world title fights.

The United States' team won the world title for the eighth time and for the fourth time in a row, defeating Canada 3-2 in extra time in the final . Third place went to Finland, which prevailed in the battle for the bronze medal against newly promoted Germany. Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams for the 2019 World Cup , no team was relegated to Division IA.

mode

After the group games in the preliminary round, the group first and second in group A qualified directly for the semi-finals. The third and fourth of the same group reached the quarter-finals. In group B, this applied to group first and second. The teams in the quarterfinals each played a qualifying game for participation in the semi-finals. The third and fourth in Group B provisionally contested a best-of-three round for seventh place and relegation to Division IA. Due to the successive increase in the top division, no team was ultimately relegated.

The team that won two out of a maximum of three games remained in the World Cup group, the loser was relegated to Division IA. Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams, the loser remained in the top division after a decision by the IIHF in May 2017.

The tournament Group A Division I has been from 15 to 21 April 2017 in the Austrian Graz played. The games took place in the Merkur ice arena with a capacity of 4,050 spectators in the Liebenau district. A total of 5,454 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 363 per game.

A few weeks after the successful qualification for the ice hockey tournament of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korean Pyeongchang Japan succeeded thanks to an unblemished record of five wins in as many games with only four goals against the direct return to the top division. On the penultimate match day, the Japanese made their way back to the top with a 4-1 victory over their hosts Austria, who had also been unbeaten up until then. The Asians managed the interim 4-0 lead after 28 minutes of play. The hosts finished the tournament in second place and thus achieved - as in 2015 - their best world championship placement ever. The question of relegation was also decided before the final day. While newly promoted Hungary secured relegation by beating France 1-0, the previous year's runner-up initially suffered relegation to Group B of Division I. They last played there in 2013 . France lost all five games and only scored one goal. Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, the French women subsequently remained in group A of division I.

The tournament Group B of Division I was from 8 to 14 April 2017 in Polish Katowice discharged. The games took place in the 1,417 seat Lodowisko Jantor . A total of 4,623 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 308 per game.

After relegation in the previous year, Slovakia managed to return directly to Group A of Division I despite a defeat against Kazakhstan on the fourth day of the tournament. Both Slovakia and Latvia started the tournament confidently. However, the Kazaks surprised - after two defeats in the beginning - on the third and fourth day of play with victories against the two tournament favorites and finally secured second place. The final day of the tournament saw the duel between Slovakia and Latvia, which the Slovaks won 8-0 and returned to Group A. The relegation to Group A of Division II had to accept newly promoted Poland, who could only score two points despite the home advantage. The decisive factor was the defeat in a direct duel with Italy and the missed victory against the People's Republic of China in the last game of the competition. Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, the Polish women subsequently remained in Group B of Division I.

The Group A tournament of Division II was held from April 2 to 8, 2017 in Gangneung , South Korea . The games took place at the 10,000-seat Gangneung Hockey Center and the 6,000-seat Kwandong Hockey Center . Both stadiums will serve as competition venues for the men's and women's Olympic ice hockey tournaments at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . They were awarded to the South Korean ice hockey association Korea Ice Hockey Association - as was the case with the division IIA tournament of the 2017 U18 Junior World Championship, which was held in parallel - as part of the world title matches after the arenas were completed in 2016. A total of 20,611 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 1,374 per game.

With the home advantage in their backs, South Korea achieved their first promotion to Group B of Division I. Both the Netherlands, relegated from the previous year, and South Korea went undefeated into the last day of the tournament, on which the hosts won the direct duel 2-0 and thus secured the tournament victory. The determination of the relegated lasted until the last tournament game. Three teams - Slovenia, newly promoted Australia and North Korea - were threatened with relegation before the last matchday. North Korea first won against Slovenia and thus held the class. But since the British beat Australia, they had to accept immediate relegation to Group B of Division II. Although the Australians finished the tournament tied with Slovenia, the Europeans won the direct comparison on the second matchday 3-0. Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, the Australians subsequently remained in Group A of Division II.

The Group B tournament of Division II was held from February 27 to March 5, 2017 in Akureyri , Iceland . The games took place in the Skautahöllin á Akureyri . A total of 3,429 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 228 per game.

After Croatia, as last year's relegated division IIA, did not register for the tournament, Turkey remained in division IIB as last year's relegated team. Based on the results, the decisions about promotion and relegation had already been made five games before the end of the tournament and thus before the last game day. The team from Mexico , which had been placed fourth in the previous year, was promoted to Division IIA for the first time. First of all, Romania had to start qualifying for Division IIB . Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, the Romanians subsequently remained in Group B of Division II.
