The fourth women's ice hockey world championship in 1997 was held from March 31 to April 6, 1997 in Kitchener , Canada . Six of the twelve preliminary round matches were played at six other locations in Ontario - Hamilton , Mississauga , North York , Brampton , Brantford and London .

Again eight teams took part in the tournament. Qualified were hosts and defending champions Canada, vice world champions USA, the best five teams of the 1996 European Women's Ice Hockey Championship , Sweden, Russia, Finland, Norway and Switzerland, as well as the best Asian team at the 1996 Pacific Championship - China. As in the previous championships, the Canadian team won the tournament and thus achieved the fourth title win.
