The 23rd Women's Ice Hockey World Championships of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2020 . With the exception of two tournaments, all other tournaments were canceled due to the Covid-19 epidemic , including the tournament of the top division planned in Canada from March 31, 2020 to April 10, 2020. Of the planned six tournaments, only the tournaments took place Division II, Group B and Division III, which were held in February 2020 and December 2019, respectively. After the World Cup in 2003 , this was the second tournament in the top division of the Women's World Cup that was canceled due to a coronavirus epidemic .

Participants, venues and periods

Top division

The top division of the world championship was to take place from March 31 to April 10, 2020 in the Canadian cities of Halifax and Truro in the province of Nova Scotia . The intended venues were the Scotiabank Center in Halifax with 10,595 seats and the Rath Eastlink Community Center in Truro, which seats 3,100. Due to the coronavirus epidemic , the IIHF decided to cancel the tournament at the beginning of March 2020. After the World Cup in 2003 , this was the second tournament in the top division of the Women's World Cup that was canceled due to a coronavirus epidemic .

Ten national teams were to take part in the tournament, and they were to play in two performance-graded groups of five teams each. The group division was determined on the basis of the IIHF world rankings that were current after the 2019 World Cup .

The Group B tournament of Division II was held from February 23-29, 2020 in Akureyri , Iceland . The games took place in the Skautahöllin á Akureyri . A total of 1,957 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 130 per game.

After relegation in the previous year, the Australian team succeeded in a sovereign manner with five wins from five games, the immediate promotion to Group A of Division II. They laid the foundation for this in the first tournament game against host Iceland, which later came second behind the Australians who only struggled a little in the game against Turkey. Last year's promoted Ukraine suffered relegation to Division III despite honorable results against Turkey, Croatia and New Zealand. The decisive factor was the defeat against the Croatians with equal points at the end, who held the class for the second year in a row.

The Division III tournament was held from December 4 to 10, 2019 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia . The games took place in the 4600-seat Winter Sports Palace. A total of 3,304 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 220 per game.

The South African team made it to Group B of Division II, which, thanks to Belgian rifle help against table leaders Romania, secured the tournament victory on the final day and thus returned to Division II for the first time since the 2013 World Cup . The South Africans started the tournament badly with a 4-11 defeat, but then won all other games and benefited from the results of the competition. The World Cup newcomer Lithuania took fifth place in the final ranking, with 16-year-old Klara Miuller drawing attention with ten points.
