The 21st Ice Hockey World Championships for women of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2018 . Between December 4, 2017 and April 14, 2018, a total of 29 national teams took part in the five tournaments of Divisions I and II as well as the qualification.

As already four years ago, the IIHF again decided not to host the top division due to the Olympic ice hockey tournament in Pyeongchang, South Korea . World championship games were only held in the lower divisions. As in the previous year, there were no relegated teams due to the two-year increase in the top division by two teams.

The tournament Group A, Division I was from 8 to 14 April 2018 in the French Vaujany discharged. The games took place in the Patinoire Vaujany with a capacity of 900 spectators . A total of 5,401 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 360 per game.

In the extremely high-performance A group of Division I - nine of the 15 tournament games ended with only one goal difference - hosts France prevailed as tournament winners and celebrated their first promotion to the top division after the team was last in the group the previous year had been. Before the last game day, five of the six teams had the chance to secure victory in the tournament. So far, every team had won at least once, including the victory of the newly promoted Slovakia against the favored Austrians on the first match day. The final day, with Austria and Hungary winning at the beginning, ultimately led to the French women being certain of the winners even before their final tournament game.

Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, there was again no relegation. Thus, despite four consecutive defeats after the opening win against Austria, Slovakia remained the last-placed team in Group A of Division I.

The Group B tournament of Division I was held from April 8-14, 2017 in Asiago , Italy . The games took place in the 3,000-seat Pala Hodegart . A total of 2,275 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 151 per game.

It was also tight in Group B of Division I, in which the hosts also managed to make the promotion. Italy prevailed and celebrated the first return to the A group of Division I. The Italians last played at this level at the 2000 World Cup in the then B group. As in the A group, five of the six teams had a chance of promotion before the last day of the tournament. With a victory over Poland, the strong promoted South Korea put pressure on the Italians who had been leading up to that point, who therefore needed a victory against Kazakhstan, and outpaced the other three teams with hopes of winning the tournament. Italy was ultimately able to celebrate promotion with a narrow 1-0 victory in the final game of the tournament.

Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, there was again no relegation. Thus, as in the previous year, Poland remained the last-placed team in Group B of Division I despite five defeats.

The Group A tournament of Division II was held from March 31 to April 6, 2018 in Maribor , Slovenia . The games took place in the 3,000-seat Ledna dvorana Tabor . A total of 5,784 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 385 per game.

After two years of membership in Division II, the team from the Netherlands made the undisputed return to Division I. They fought head-to-head with the British until the final day of the match. Both teams went into the direct duel on the last day of the tournament without losing points, in which the Netherlands won 4-0 and were able to celebrate their promotion to Division I. It was followed by North Korea, whose squad included several players who had participated with the Korean team in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February . On the other places came Australia and the host Slovenia.

Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, there was again no relegation. Mexico, which had surprisingly been promoted last year, remained the last-placed team in Group A of Division II despite five defeats.

The Group B tournament of Division II was held from March 17 to 23, 2018 in Valdemoro , Spain , a satellite city of the capital Madrid . The games took place in the Pista Municipal de Hielo Francisco Fernández Ochoa with a capacity of 2,000 . A total of 3,458 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 230 per game.

After several second places in previous years, hosts Spain achieved their first promotion to Division IIA on the penultimate match day. Already on the first three days of the tournament, the Spaniards and the strong promoters from the Republic of China (Taiwan) emerged as favorites to win the tournament. The two teams met on the penultimate matchday in the constellation that only they still played for the tournament victory. Both teams have so far been victorious in three games without losing points. In the end, the Spaniards decided the direct duel with a clear 6: 1 and were promoted to Group A of Division II for the first time. Behind the flawless Spaniards, the newcomer from the island of Taiwan was three points behind in second place, followed by Iceland and New Zealand.

Due to the successive increase in the top division to ten teams and the associated replenishment of the lower divisions, there was again no relegation. Despite five defeats, Romania remained - as in the previous year - as the last-placed team in Group B of Division II.

The qualification for Group B of Division II was held from December 4th to 9th 2017 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia . The games took place in the 4600-seat Winter Sports Palace. A total of 1,366 spectators attended the ten tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 136 per game.

The Croatian team emerged as the winner and thus promoted to Group B of Division II. After relegating from Group A of Division II in 2016, the Croatians waived participation in Group B of Division II in the previous year and were thus relegated again. With four wins in as many tournament games, however, the promotion succeeded.
