The women's 2001 Ice Hockey World Championship was the seventh edition of the by the International Ice Hockey Federation discharged IIHF competition . Between March 5 and April 8, 2001, a total of 26 national teams took part in the four tournaments of the top division as well as division I and the two qualifying groups for the same.

There was also a restructuring of the lower divisions in the women's division. The former B World Championship was renamed Division I, the qualification for the B World Championship in Division II. In addition, Division I should be reduced from eight to six participants, so that there were two relegated and no promoted this season. Division II should also play with six teams in the future, so a qualification with ten teams took place in 2001. For the surplus teams, a Division III was introduced from 2003, in which six of the ten teams had to be relegated this season.

The tournament's top division was at six venues in the state of Minnesota of the United States held: Blaine , Minneapolis , Fridley , Plymouth , Rochester and St. Cloud .

The Canadian women's national team remained unbeaten in the course of the tournament, and thus also at world championships, and won its seventh world title in a row. The United States team won the silver medal , while the Russian national team won the bronze medal.

Qualification for Division II

The qualifying tournaments for the 2003 World Cup were originally scheduled to qualify for Division I. Due to the restructuring of the divisions for the 2002/03 season, the individual participants were redistributed. The top two in Group A and B qualified for Division II 2003, while all other teams were eligible for the Division III tournament.

The two tournaments were held in Bucharest and Maribor .
