The top division of the Women's Ice Hockey World Championship 2021 is expected to take place in the Canadian cities of Halifax and Truro in the province of Nova Scotia . In the previous year, the 20th tournament in the top division was canceled due to the Covid-19 epidemic . The intended venues are the Scotiabank Center in Halifax with 10,595 seats and the Rath Eastlink Community Center in Truro, which can seat 3,100 spectators.

The tournaments of Division I and Division II Group A were also canceled in the previous year. The Division I Group A and Division II Group A tournaments were awarded to the hosts of the canceled 2020 tournaments. The Division I Group B tournament, on the other hand, will take place in Beijing to prepare the venue for the Olympic tournament in 2022 . The winner of Division II B 2020, Australia was refused promotion to Group A because there was no relegation from Division II A. In contrast, the last of Division II B was relegated to Group III, the winner of Division III 2020 rose accordingly.

Top division

Ten national teams will take part in the tournament, playing in two performance-graded groups of five teams each. The group division was determined on the basis of the IIHF world rankings that were current after the 2019 World Cup .

mode

The mode corresponds to the one from 2019 . The ten participants are divided into two performance-graded groups of five teams. All teams initially play four games, after which all five teams in Group A and the three teams with the highest points in Group B qualified for the quarter-finals after the preliminary round. The last two teams in Group B were relegated to Division IA.

The teams in the quarterfinals each play a qualifying game for participation in the semi-finals. The winners of the two semi-finals qualify for the final. The teams eliminated in the quarter-finals determined the fifth participant in Group A in a further placement round in the following year.
