The 13th Women's Ice Hockey World Championships of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the Ice Hockey World Championships of 2009 . Between April 4 and 18, 2009, a total of 21 national teams took part in the three top division tournaments and divisions I and II. Division III and IV were not held this year.

The twelfth edition of the top division took place from April 4 to 12, 2009 in Hämeenlinna , Finland . The United States team was able to defend its title from the previous year and became world champions for the third time.

The top division women's world championship was held from April 4th to 12th, 2009 in Hämeenlinna , Finland . The games took place in the Patria-areena with 5,360 seats and the Metritiski-areenalla in the same complex with 700 seats.

Nine national teams took part in the tournament, playing in three groups of three teams each. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 2008 World Cup according to the following key:

As in previous years, nine teams took part in the world championship. These were initially divided into three preliminary round groups. The winners of the three preliminary round groups A, B and C played the two finalists in a further group (D), the second placed in group E played the second participant in the game for third place (against the third in group D). In the relegation group F, the third-placed players in the preliminary round groups A – C played against relegation. The last two placed are relegated to Division I.

Division III and IV

Divisions III and IV were not played this year, but were included again in the program at the following World Cup in 2011 . Due to the format change of the competition, in that the top division played again with eight instead of nine teams from 2011 and two teams were relegated in the top division and division I, while only one rose, some teams rose automatically in 2011 a division.

  • Iceland , which won Division IV in 2008, did not move up to Division III, but stayed in Division IV.
  • The Turkey rose, after the sixth and last place in the Division IV in 2008, in the newly introduced Division V from.
  • The newly introduced Division V was formed by Turkey and the four newcomers to the World Cup, Poland , Bulgaria , Spain and Ireland .
