Michelle Karvinen (born March 27, 1990 in Rødovre ) is a Danish - Finnish ice hockey player who has been playing for the University of North Dakota in the WCHA since 2011 and plays internationally for Finland. Her brother Jannik is also an ice hockey player, but plays for Denmark internationally.

Career

Michelle Karvinen is the daughter of a Danish woman and Heikki Karvinen , who played as a player in Finland and Denmark and now works as a coach in Denmark. Michelle Karvinen grew up in Denmark and began her career at Rødovre SIK , where she played for the youth department. From 2005 she ran for the U19 team of the club and won the championship of this age group with this team in 2010 and 2011. In addition, she ran parallel for the club's second men's team in the second-class 1st division and won their championship in 2011.

Success in Finland and change to WCHA

In 2007 she started playing for Espoo Blues in the Finnish Naisten SM-sarja . In 2008 she won her first Finnish championship with the Blues and repeated that success a year later.

In 2011, she decided to move to North America and began studying graphic design at the University of North Dakota . Since then, she has been playing for the university's ice hockey team in the WCHA , a league of the NCAA .

International

Michelle Karvinen has both Danish and Finnish citizenship. In order to have the chance to take part in the Winter Olympics, she decided to play internationally for the Finnish national team. She made her debut in 2006 in Finland's youth team. In 2009 she was nominated for her first World Cup, scored five goals over the course of the tournament and was elected to the tournament's All-Star team. A year later she took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and won the bronze medal.

At the 2011 World Cup , she won another bronze medal with the Finnish women and was re-elected to the All-Star Team.
